The world’s first lipstick has been discovered in the Sumerian city of Ur, archaeologists have discovered.

Five thousand years ago, ancient Egyptians used black, orange and fuchsia lipsticks.

In Ancient Rome, a lipstick called Fucus was made from purplish silver hydrous plant dye and red wine sediment.

In Tang Dynasty of China, the color of sandalwood was preferred by aristocratic women and gecko prostitutes, which was used in later generations.

Under Queen Victoria, lipstick was seen as the preserve of prostitutes and its use was taboo.

Lipstick was popular among French and English men in Europe between about 1660 and 1789. In the United States and Puritan immigrants in the 18th century, it was not popular to wear lipstick. Women who loved beauty would rub their lips with ribbons when people were not paying attention to them, so as to increase their ruddy appearance. This situation continued until the 19th century, when pale was popular.

Guerguerin introduced tubular lipstick to the United States during the French period, selling mainly to a small number of aristocrat. The first metallic tubular lipstick was produced by Maurice Levi and Scoville Manufacturing Company in Waterberry, Connecticut.

In the 1915s, manufacturing was a mass-market product. During suffragette demonstrations in New York City in 1912, prominent feminists wore lipstick as a symbol of women’s liberation.

In the 1920s, the popularity of movies in the United States also led to the popularity of lipstick. Later, the popularity of all kinds of lipstick colors would be influenced by movie stars, which led to the trend.

In the 1940s, when American women were affected by the war, they would use makeup to keep a good face. Tangee, one of the largest lipstick manufacturers at that time, once launched an advertisement entitled “War, Women and lipstick”.

In 1950, when the war ended, women led the fashion for full, seductive lips. In the 1960s, due to the popularity of light lipstick such as white and silver, fish scales were used to create a shimmering effect.

In 1970, when Disco was popular, purple was a popular lipstick color, while punk lipstick was black.

Boy Band George in the 1980s. In the 1990s, coffee lipstick was introduced, and some rock bands used black and blue lip colors.

In the late 1990s, vitamins, herbs, spices and other ingredients were added to lipsticks.
